USING MINOXIDIL SAFELY

Minoxidil side effects on the scalp

Minoxidil can cause side effects on the scalp, usually local skin reactions. Correct dosing, careful application and recognising warning signs help support safe use.

In brief

  • Common symptoms include dryness, itching, redness, flaking or a burning sensation.
  • Unwanted hair growth can occur if the lotion comes into contact with the face or other areas of skin.
  • Do not use more than the recommended amount and apply it only to a dry, intact scalp.
  • Stop using it and seek medical advice immediately if you experience a severe skin reaction, dizziness, heart palpitations, chest pain or swelling.

LOCAL SKIN REACTIONS

Which side effects occur most often?

Minoxidil can irritate the scalp. Possible symptoms include dryness, itching, redness, flaking, skin rash or a burning sensation.

Symptoms may also be related to other ingredients in the lotion. Take persistent or noticeable irritation seriously and consult the package leaflet.

Temporary increased hair loss at the beginning of treatment is also known as minoxidil shedding and is not the same as a side effect.

Minoxidil is often used for androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hereditary hair loss.

UNWANTED HAIR GROWTH

How does hair growth occur outside the scalp?

Lotion that runs down the forehead or is transferred through the hands, pillow or skin contact can cause unwanted hair growth.

Apply carefully, wash your hands immediately and allow the scalp to dry thoroughly before lying down or wearing headwear.

CORRECT DOSAGE

Why is more not better?

A higher dose or more frequent application does not automatically improve results, but it can increase the risk of irritation and absorption into the body.

Follow the dosage and instructions for the specific product. Apply it only to the intended areas of the scalp.

WARNING SIGNS

When should you stop and seek advice?

Stop using minoxidil and seek medical help if you experience a severe skin reaction or symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, heart palpitations, chest pain, unexplained weight gain or swelling.

These symptoms are uncommon but require assessment. Resume use only after receiving appropriate advice.

SAFE DAILY USE

How can you reduce the likelihood of side effects?

Apply minoxidil to a dry, intact scalp and avoid contact with the eyes, face and damaged skin. Wash your hands after application.

Do not combine it with other scalp treatments without advice. If irritation persists or you are unsure, a doctor or pharmacist can help determine what is appropriate.

Important to know

Always read the package leaflet for your product before use. Do not use minoxidil during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or on damaged or inflamed scalp skin. If you are unsure because of a medical condition or medication, consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Dryness, itching, redness, flaking, skin rash and a burning sensation on the scalp may occur.

Can minoxidil cause heart palpitations?

Systemic symptoms are uncommon when topical minoxidil is used correctly, but heart palpitations, chest pain, dizziness or swelling require you to stop and seek medical assessment.

What should I do if my scalp itches?

Check the directions for use, do not apply more than recommended and stop if irritation is severe or persistent. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
