STRESSGERELATEERDE DIFFUSE HAARUITVAL

Hair loss due to stress

In brief

THE HAIR CYCLE

How can stress cause hair loss?

Hair follicles go through a cycle of growth, transition, rest, and shedding. After significant physical or emotional strain, more hairs than usual may temporarily move rapidly from the growth phase into the resting phase. This reaction is called telogen effluvium.

The precise biological response is complex. Stress hormones, inflammatory signals, sleep, nutrition, and other physical changes may all play a role. The hair follicles generally remain intact and can produce a new hair again after the resting phase.

DELAYED RESPONSE

Why does hair loss only start months later?

Hair does not fall out immediately when it leaves the growth phase. It first goes through a transition and resting period. As a result, the increased shedding usually becomes noticeable only about two to three months after the triggering event.

This delay can sometimes make the connection with stress difficult to recognise. When looking for a trigger, consider not only the past few days but also an illness, fever, surgery, childbirth, severe psychological stress, rapid weight loss, or a major change several months earlier.

RECOGNIZABLE SIGNALS

How can you recognise stress-related hair loss?

The hair loss is usually diffuse: you lose more hair than normal across a large part of the scalp. This may be noticeable in the shower, on your pillow, in your brush, or while washing and styling your hair. Your hair gradually feels less full.

Typically, no sharply defined bald patches develop, and the hairline is usually preserved. A clearly widening part, receding hairline, or thinning at the crown may also indicate androgenetic alopecia. Both forms can also occur at the same time.

DURATION AND RECOVERY

Does hair grow back after stress?

With acute telogen effluvium, the increased shedding often gradually decreases within a few months once the trigger has passed or is addressed. The hair follicles can then produce hair again.

Visible recovery takes longer than stopping the shedding. New hairs need time to build up length and volume. As a result, it can take six to twelve months before density visibly improves. The course varies from person to person and also depends partly on any other causes.

SUPPORT AND ASSESSMENT

What can you do about stress-related hair loss?

Focus on addressing the possible trigger: sufficient sleep, a regular and balanced diet, and appropriate support for prolonged stress. Treat the hair gently and avoid unnecessary pulling or harsh care. Reducing stress does not guarantee an immediate end to shedding, because the hair cycle responds slowly.

Have persistent or unexplained hair loss assessed. A doctor can examine the pattern and scalp and, if necessary, discuss blood tests to rule out, for example, iron deficiency or a thyroid problem. Food supplements do not treat telogen effluvium, but they may support the hair’s normal condition.

Can stress really cause hair loss?

Yes. Severe or prolonged physical or emotional stress can trigger telogen effluvium, temporarily causing more hairs to enter the resting and shedding phase at the same time. However, everyday stress does not automatically cause hair loss.

How long after stress does hair loss begin?

The increased hair loss usually only becomes noticeable about two to three months after the stressful event. This is because hairs first go through a transitional and resting phase before falling out.

How long does stress-related hair loss last?

In an acute form, the increased hair loss often lasts for several months and then gradually decreases. Visible recovery of hair density takes longer because new hairs grow slowly.

Does hair that has fallen out due to stress grow back?

Usually, the hair follicles can produce hair again once the trigger has passed or is addressed. It can take six to twelve months before an improvement in hair density becomes clearly visible.

What helps with hair loss caused by stress?

Focus on recovery, sufficient sleep, regular nutritious meals, and appropriate support for prolonged stress. Treat your hair gently. There is no method that can immediately reverse the delayed hair cycle.

When is a professional assessment advisable?

Have hair loss assessed if it persists for more than six months, worsens rapidly, follows a pattern, or occurs in patches, or if it is accompanied by itching, redness, flaking, pain, or other physical symptoms.
